I chose the profession of social work, because it correlates strongly with my values and beliefs. A guiding principle of social work is enhancing human wellbeing, with a particular focus on the empowerment of those who are oppressed, vulnerable, or discriminated against. As a member of NASW (National Association of Social Workers), I strive to follow their core values, including the dignity and worth of each person, social justice, the importance of human relationships, and integrity.
While my work is clinical and personal, it is important to remember that one person's experience is never in isolation from the complex systems that surround us. Political, societal, institutional, familial, interpersonal, and other dynamics shape our lived experience, our trauma, our pain, our privilege, and our power.
Dignity and Worth
I am committed to treating each child, teen, and adult in a caring, respectful fashion, honoring individual differences and diversity. Each person seeking counseling has the right to self-determination and has an innate potential for healing and growth.
Importance of Human Relationships
I know that connection and attachment are a basic human need and relationships are a powerful agent for change. Strong relationships between children and parents, siblings, partners, colleagues, and friends can help maintain and improve the wellbeing of each individual and the system as a whole.
Social Justice
I strive to promote and support anti-hate, anti-racism, and social justice for all people. My work is rooted in listening to the voices of marginalized groups and individuals. I commit to self-examination of my own implicit biases, and to furthering my own learning and understanding through reading, listening, and studying. I firmly believe that I have a lot to learn both from experts and from the clients I work with who are the experts on their own lives.
Honesty/ Integrity
I aspire to utilize the same tools and practices in my own life that I recommend to others. I must challenge myself to practice the same balance and self-care that I expect my clients to work towards. I am aware of my own limitations and will refer a client elsewhere or recommend additional services if necessary for optimal growth and support.
